3 Conversation Starter Tips You’ll Want To RememberLUX South Africa | 2 October 2017
The trick here is not to compliment something like their hair or their eyes. Choose something which they would have picked, or something which shows off their uniqueness.
A well-worded question is a great way to connect with your partner after a long day, on a first date, with your new boss or even with a friend you’ve known for years. Sometimes you want to talk about more than just the latest gossip, your love life, or the newest beauty tips. Those are all great things to chat about, but if you’re looking for slightly more meaningful conversation starters for a special someone or to help you network better in the office, here are some tips from House of LUX to help you strike up a serious conversation!
Compliment something that showcases their individuality
The trick here is not to compliment something like their hair or their eyes. Choose something which they would have picked, or something which shows off their uniqueness. If it’s another woman, compliment her lipstick shade, handbag, the colour of her dress or the shape of her sunglasses – something which speaks to their individuality. Another great one is to compliment a book or magazine they’re holding or reading, but only do that if you actually know something about it!
Don’t ask them how their day was
It’s boring! You know you’re going to get a ‘good thanks, yours?’ and that will be that! Not much of a conversation starter, is it? Instead, ask them something specific about their day. Maybe ask them if anything unusual happened that day, if something made them laugh, or what they would do to make Tuesdays (or whatever day of the week it is!) as good as Fridays.
What business would you open if you knew it would be successful?
This is basically a subtler way of asking someone what they’re passionate about. While someone might say ‘I dunno, I watch TV and that’s all really’ if you ask what they do with their spare time, they’re likely to actually think about this question and give an answer. Maybe they would run a charity. Or perhaps they would own an ice cream truck. Maybe they’d design shoes or create a range of beauty products. Either way, you now knew something that you didn’t before and you have something really interesting to follow up on. In fact, this question can even reveal some surprises for couples or people who have known each other a long time!
