The ultimate guide to gifting on a budgetLUX South Africa | 4 December 2017
With the holidays right around the corner, many of us start to get the festive season jitters.
Take a deep breath and take a look at these guidelines. Remember, you don’t have to spend a fortune to make this a special time of year. All you need is a keen strategy and a little bit of creativity.
First things first. Cash is king. Set yourself a budget. Make it easier by setting an overall budget and then break it down into smaller amounts allocated to each person you intend to spoil. Write it down on paper. Be realistic about what you can and can’t afford.
Make your own hampers and stockings, rather than opting for big ticket items. Using beautiful wrapping paper and fun decorations you can make individual bags with things that you know your friends and family will love. This will show them that you have really thought about what they would appreciate. And remember, you can save when buying in bulk. For instance, putting together a hamper of indulgent body washes, gorgeously scented shower gel and other skincare products based on what each person likes, is a thoughtful way to spoil your loved ones.
Don’t blow your bonus.
If you are lucky enough to get a bonus, don’t blow it all on festive gifts. People generally get paid early in December which means a longer wait for your January pay check. Make sure you set aside a decent chunk of money to pay for essentials such as school fees and the like or you could experience difficult financial consequences.
Use the specials.
Start your gift shopping early and you will almost always find better deals. If you get in early, you can save some serious bucks. And don’t be afraid to buy things on sale. It’s the clever thing to do!
Passing on items that you have owned is sensible and thrifty, if it’s done properly. There is nothing wrong with giving a present a new home if you no longer find it useful. Repurposing old but treasured items is practical and altruistic way to spread joy.
Remember, gifts are gestures, so you don’t need to spend a fortune on someone to let them know that they are special to you. The tiniest gift can remind them that you care. There is also a lot to be said for creative wrapping. Showing some effort and creativity is a fun and cost-effective way to express your love and care.
